Congratulations! You’ve decided to buy a home. However, home buying in Ulster County can seem overwhelming when the time comes to get started. Even after narrowing the field according to budget, style, and other basic criteria, there will be many homes left to choose from. Here are some things buyers should look for that may not be as obvious:

Neighborhood Noise Levels

It can be hard to determine how loud a neighborhood is. When you’re visiting the home with your real estate agent, listen for sounds that you may find irritating, such as barking dogs, road noise or air traffic. Another idea is to visit the area at several different times of the day and night. On a weekend morning, drive around and look for neighbors who mow their lawns at 7:30 or who let their kids out to play loudly at similar hours. Next, go by the house at about 1 AM and listen for loud parties. Those who won't be joining in may want to avoid being near a party house.

With all sources of noise, the important thing to consider is whether it will bother you. Many people aren't troubled at all by lawnmowers running in the morning or music blaring in the middle of the night. In fact, some homebuyers may find the presence of these sounds to be comforting.

House Layout

The interiors of most modern homes are aesthetically pleasing from an architectural standpoint. That doesn't mean that the layout will be convenient. Look for how the front door is placed relative to the kitchen, stairs that will have to be navigated every day, and bedrooms with no bathrooms nearby. Even though that charming cottage has stolen your heart, you should choose the house that will not become annoying over time.

Neighbors

There's a saying that people act the same everywhere. While this would surely be convenient, it's not true in the least! The difference between neighborhoods can be an eye-opener. Walk around the prospective area and see how people respond. In one area, people may dash out to say "hi," while a few streets over, they might not even look out their windows. Immersing yourself in the area first will ensure that it’s a match for the your home buying personality.

These are just a few tips for finding a good home to buy, and that you’ll enjoy for years to come. Those who want to start home selling in Ulster County should pay attention to them, too. Keeping these things in mind will allow home sellers to advertise their properties to the demographic most likely to enjoy them.
