Homes for Sale in Amenia, NY $800,000 to $1,000,000

Amenia, NY

Amenia, NY, is a town in northeast Dutchess County, comprised of the Amenia, Wassaic, Amenia Union, South Amenia, Smithfield and Leedsville hamlets. Officially formed in 1788 on the western border of Connecticut, the town’s name is derived from the Latin word “amoena,” which means “pleasant to the eye.” In the southern part of town, the Ten Mile River, a tributary of the Housatonic River and a popular destination for whitewater rafting, is formed by the confluence of the Wassaic and Webatuck Creeks. Covering 43.2 square miles, Amenia is home to The Wassaic Project, a nonprofit arts and music organization providing public programming and artist residencies year round, as well the Indian Rock Schoolhouse, Lewis Mumford House and the Hendrik Winegar House, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Amenia provides southern access to the Hudson Valley Rail Trail, popular for recreational hiking and biking. Once home to Gail Borden, the inventor of condensed milk, the town today attracts visitors to Monte’s Local Kitchen & Tap Room and the Cascade Mountain Winery & Restaurant.
