Hurley

The historic town of Hurley, NY, is located west of the city of Kingston in the northeast part of Ulster County. Two hours from New York City and one hour from Albany, the town is nestled between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. The Esopus Creek, a tributary of the Hudson River, flows through Hurley, and the Ashokan Reservoir comprises part of the northern section of town. Originally the site of an Esopus Indian community, the area now known as Hurley was settled by the Dutch in 1662; after being destroyed during the Esopus Wars, it was resettled and renamed “Hurley” by the English in 1669. The town is made up of 11 hamlets, including Old Hurley in the central part of town, which in 1777 was the military headquarters for General George Clinton’s Continental Forces and temporarily served as the capital of the State of New York. Today, Old Hurley’s Main Street is part of the National Register of Historic Sites due to its stretch of stone houses well preserved as residences for more than 300 years. Some of these homes are open to the public once a year in July on Stone House Day, and one has been converted to the museum of the Hurley Heritage Society.
