Homes for Sale in Kinderhook, NY $700,000 to $800,000

Kinderhook, NY

One of the original towns of Columbia County and the retirement home of the eighth US President Martin Van Buren, the town of Kinderhook, NY, is one of the most historically significant locales in the Hudson Valley. The township of Kinderhook was chartered in 1687, and the name appeared on Dutch maps as early as 1614, derived from the Dutch Kinderhoek, meaning “bend in the river where the children are,” for the Native American children who greeted Henry Hudson upon his landing in the area. Today, Kinderhook is home to the Columbia County Historical Society, as well as the former Martin Van Buren Public School, which now houses an international contemporary art gallery, The School, a branch of the Jack Shainman Gallery. Close to the Hudson River on Kinderhook Creek, noted for its powerful waterfalls and surrounding fertile farmland, Kinderhook has long been a prosperous and popular place in Upstate New York. The town is known for its historical architecture, farms, farm stands and Farmers Market.
