Barrytown

Barrytown, NY, is a hamlet in the town of Red Hook, within the Hudson Valley Historic District, in Dutchess County. Established in the 1830s, the hamlet houses four of the Hudson River Valley estates: Edgewater, home to Gore Vidal in the 1950s and 60s; Rokeby, also known as La Bergerie and the former residence of the Astor family; Sylvania, designed by architect Charles A. Platt; and Massena, where a young Theodore Roosevelt cultivated his appreciation for nature. The song “Barrytown” was written and recorded by local musician Donald Fagen, the late Walter Becker and their band Steely Dan for their 1974 album Pretzel Logic.
