Beacon

Beacon, NY, is a Mid-Hudson region town in the southwest corner of Dutchess County, approximately 90 miles south of Albany and 60 miles north of New York City. Lying at the foot of Mt. Beacon, the town stretches across 4.9 square miles on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, across from sister city Newburgh. With its walkable Main Street shopping district, numerous natural amenities and thriving, eclectic arts scene, Beacon is known as Escape Brooklyn’s “hippest city in the Hudson Valley.” In the 1990s, the town of approximately 15,000 residents began its commercial rebirth and artistic renaissance, highlighted by the opening of one of the world’s largest and most prestigious contemporary art museums, Dia:Beacon. Today, the arts continue to thrive, with numerous galleries along Main Street, including the Beacon Artists Union, the Hudson Valley Maker and Artisan Collective, and Hudson Beach Glass. The Howland Cultural Center, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, presents exhibitions and hosts other cultural activities. Second Saturday, a citywide celebration of the arts held the second Saturday of every month by the Beacon Arts nonprofit, features gallery exhibitions, music and food tastings. The town also plays host to Beacon Open Studios, Windows on Main Street, Beacon 3D, Beacon Riverfest Music and Food Festival, and the Beacon Independent Film Festival.
