Purchase is a hamlet in the town and village of Harrison, in Westchester County, just 27 miles northeast of Manhattan. One myth explains that its name is derived from Harrison's purchase, where John Harrison was to be granted as much land as he could ride in one day. This quintessential “leafy hamlet” is sprinkled with opulent houses on stretches of lush green land. As pastoral as it is, Purchase offers easy access to highways, trains and the Westchester County Airport. “Everywhere you need to go is 12 to 15 minutes away,” one resident enthused, singling out her beach club in Rye and the Westchester, a shopping mall in White Plains. The area blends residences, corporations and educational institutions, which came about as 20th-century landowners sold off big properties to diverse interests. The Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens is a renowned collection of 45 pieces of outdoor sculpture at the PepsiCo campus. Finally, Purchase’s main colleges (SUNY Purchase, Manhattanville, and the Westchester campus of Fordham University) offer many public lectures and cultural events.
