Kingston’s historic Uptown neighborhood (also known as the Stockade District) has become well-known for its sophisticated dining, chic boutiques, and lively nightlife. But the community also works hard to preserve its storied past. For instance, the Four Corners — known as “America’s oldest intersection”— features colonial-era buildings on each corner at the intersection of John and Crown Streets. But while the past is honored, Uptown maintains a steadfastly modern vibe. Here’s a sampling of what this exciting neighborhood has to offer.

A Guide to Visiting and Living in Uptown Kingston NY Wilde Beest / Boitson's

You’d be hard-pressed to find a restaurant Uptown that doesn’t serve top-quality food. Diehard foodies will love the creative local fare by founder and chef Chris Turgeon at Wilde Beest. Brunch at Duo Bistro can’t be beat, with mouthwatering menu options like bread pudding French toast or gourmet omelets. Boitson’s is best known for serving up fresh oysters, but their entire dinner menu is tempting. Plus, they’ve got a secret back patio that overlooks the Catskills. Try Sissy’s Café for sandwiches, wraps, and smoothies in a casual setting, or Yum Yum Noodle Bar for Asian-inspired cuisine.

Uptown shopping includes an array of options from classic vintage finds to the latest trends. Peruse stylish women’s fashion at Oak 42 and Theresa & Co.; the latter also offers clothes and accessories for baby. Find casual men’s attire at Hamilton & Adams or browse a curated selection of vintage clothing for men and women at Lovefield Vintage. (Here's a fun interview of the owners from the blog, thePaillette.com). For the home, there are culinary necessities at BlueCashew Kitchen Homestead and mid-century furniture at Stuff. One of our favorites is Exit Nineteen where you'll find gorgeous Mid-century furniture and a curated selection of beautiful things for your home. Rough Draft is an indie bookshop that’s also a bar and coffeeshop; enjoy a variety of artisanal coffees, craft beers, and locally made baked goods. Or, find used and rare tomes at Half Moon Books.
