As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, there are only so many outside activities you can do. Sooner or later, you need to warm up and get cozy in the comfort of your home. Some people have an admirable talent for enjoying the great indoors – but most of us can use a little help in the coziness department. Here are a few things you can do to indulge yourself in relaxed comfort and make your home enjoyably better at fending off winter’s harsh chill.

Keep those home fires burning

The rugged Catskills climate was practically made for fireplaces, fire pits, wood stoves, but really, any fireplace makes for incredible coziness. Gazing silently at a crackling fire is a helluva lot healthier than being transfixed to a screen – and arguably more romantic too. The smell of wood burning in the air is one of the delightful scents of winter. By the way, try turning off the lights in your fireplace room to appreciate the glowing beauty of the dancing flames. Yes, please!

Snuggle with a blanket

There's something so satisfying about snuggling up on a couch, daybed or your favorite chair under the warmth of a fuzzy winter throw! Nothing beats that “snug as a bug” feeling like a soft warm blanket!

Curl up with a book, magazine, or tablet.

When it gets dark out so early, it’s so easy to fall into a TV-binge-watching hole. Create an alternative way to spend your downtime by feathering a comfortable space where you can curl up with your winter blanket and a favorite book, a glossy magazine or your tablet.  Keep plenty a supply of interesting reading materials, and a perch for a hot cup of something, all together in one place to kick back and enjoy!

Sip mindfully on a warm drink

Warming up with a mug full of warmth is the ultimate soother. Whether you opt for chocolatey goodness, an aromatic tea, or your favorite cup of joe, take five and enjoy a few quiet moments you can claim for yourself.  P.S. If you’re a cocoa lover, don’t forget the whipped cream and marshmallows!

Add cozy rugs to your bedroom or bathroom

If you have bare floors, add a rug, even if it’s just a small runner next to the side of the bed for your bare feet. And, if your home isn’t equipped with radiant-heat floors, cover up that cold tile with a flat-weave rug. It will make getting up on cold, dark mornings a bit more pleasant.

Scentual stimulation

The right scents can enhance, alter and stimulate your mood. An essential oil diffuser can add aromatic ambiance, but scented candles or potpourri can definitely enhance your sense of calm and clarity. There are so many cozy scents to choose from.
